UPD tops mining licensures

(AUG. 13)—Rachel Angela Penuliar Ferrer, a graduate from the UP Diliman College of Engineering Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (DMMME) topped the nationwide August 2019 Mining Engineer Licensure Examinations held on Aug. 8 with a 91.20 percent rating. Two other UPD DMMME graduates made it to the Top 10. Gian Carlo Masagca Seblos placed second (90.50%) while Francisco Carpio Raymundo placed fifth (89.85%). Manegdeg is COE dean

(AUG. 7)—Prof. Ferdinand G. Manegdeg is the UP College of Engineering’s 19th dean. Manegdeg’s appointment was approved at the Board of Regents’ 1346th Meeting on Jul. 31. He is set to replace incumbent dean Dr. Rizalinda De Leon and will serve from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31, 2022. He is a Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. (AUG. 6)— Prof. Giovanni A. Tapang, PhD is the new dean of the UPD College of Science (CS). Tapang, appointed by the UP Board of Regents on July 31 at its 1346st meeting, will serve until July 30, 2022. Tapang is Professor 3 at the National Institute of Physics (NIP). (AUG. 1)—A 2017 study by UP professors confirmed the presence of fine particulate pollutants from East Asia in the cold air coming into the country during the northeast monsoon (Hanging Amihan). The New York State Department of Health defines fine particulate matter refers as “tiny particles or droplets in the air that are two and one half microns or less in width.” Exposure can cause short-term effects such as eye, nose, throat and lung irritation, coughing, sneezing, runny nose and shortness of breath.
