CALL FOR PAPERS Asian Studies: Journal of Critical Perspectives on Asia, a peer-reviewed journal published since 1963 by the Asian Center, University of the Philippines Diliman, welcomes original contributions in the form of: • Full-length research articles • Reviews • Commentaries and documents • Literary writings (poetry and short fiction), and • Travel narratives. UPWVT ends first round with a win

(March 18) — The UP Women’s Volleyball Team (UPWVT) ended the first round of the UAAP Season 81 Volleyball Tournament with a four-set win, 25-27, 25-14, 25- 12, 25-21, over the Adamson University Lady Falcons on Mar. 17 at the FilOil Arena in San Juan City. Reinventing traditional music

(FEB. 28) – Japanese musician Keisho Ohno amazed the audience with traditional Japanese music infused with contemporary rock beats at “Rocking Tradition: A Shamisen Concert with Keisho Ohno” on Feb. 12 at the UP GT-Toyota Asian Center Auditorium. In the 90-minute concert, 43-year-old Keisho performed 12 songs infront of a full-house auditorium using a “tsugaru shamisen.” According to the Samurai Archives website, the “shamisen,” a three-stringed instrument with a square body and played by plucking with a “bachi” (plectrum), is believed to have first emerged in Japan in the late 16th century…

Call for Papers: Japanese Studies in the Philippines: A Research Competition for Students

The Japan Foundation and the UP Asian Center are calling for submissions of Japan-related research for the “Japanese Studies in the Philippines: A Research Competition for Students.” The competition is open to Filipino students in the undergraduate and graduate levels. Lupang Hinirang exhibit opens at UPD
