Mammals of Luzon book launched
The UP Institute of Biology (UPIB) in partnership with the Diliman Science Research Foundation and the Philippines Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation launched the book “Mammals of Luzon Island: A Biogeographic Perspective in Evolution, Ecology and Conservation” on Aug. 10 at the UPIB Auditorium.
Authored by Dr. Lawrence R. Heaney, Dr. Danilo S. Balete and Eric A Rickart, and published by The Johns Hopkins University Press, the book reveals that Luzon Island has the greatest concentration of distinct species of mammals in the world.

Making policy decisions on the Philippine scientific enterprise system
Pouring outlay into research and development (R&D) should be a sound investment for economic growth. After all, scientific knowledge, when discovered and applied successfully, boosts labor productivity, creates wealth and enhances quality of life. The Philippines followed this premise by increasing budget allocation in the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) by 115.11 percent from 2009 to 2014. Blazing in glory: UPD Class 2016
Folding fans, portable electric fans, umbrellas and shades became staple paraphernalia at UP Diliman’s (UPD) 105th General Commencement Exercises as good weather, sunshine and sweltering heat bid the Class of 2016 farewell on Jun. 26.

Ombudsman says give people hope
Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales called on the graduates of the UP College of Law (CL) to give hope to people “when all hope is lost” and not turn the law into an instrument of oppression at the latter’s recognition rites on Jun. 27 at the UP Theater.
