CI to teach Mandarin at DFA

  Officials and staff of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will soon be trained in Mandarin language and culture by staff of the University of the Philippines Confucius Institute (CI) with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between both institutions on Jan. 11. The program, called Basic Mandarin Language and Culture Level 1-111, is a 90-hour training course comprising 80 hours of Mandarin language and 10 hours of Chinese culture.   Dr. Ronahlee A. Asuncion was formally installed as the eighth dean of the School of Labor and Industrial Relations (SOLAIR) at affirmation rites on Dec. 16 at the School’s Isabelo delos Reyes Auditirium. Unified action for disaster prevention

After typhoon Yolanda in 2009, the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 and the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011, people became more conscious of the need for disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM). Recognizing how destructive natural phenomena can be, 10 academic units at UP Diliman (UPD) organized the conference “Disaster and Disciplines” on Nov. 18 at the GT-Toyota Asian Center Auditorium. BOR approves 2 new OICA programs

The UP Board of Regents (BOR) approved two new programs “to enhance the artistic engagements” of UP Diliman (UPD) students at its 1323rd meeting on Dec. 16. The UPD Visual Arts and Cultural Studies Scholarship Program and UPD Creative/Critical Thesis Grant in the Arts, Culture and the Humanities aim to benefit student artists and student-critics in the visual arts, arts criticism and cultural studies. Gabriel receives JIRCAS award

Noted scientist and Food Science and Nutrition professor Dr. Alonzo A. Gabriel received another accolade from the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) of the Japan Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Gabriel was one of the three recipients of the 2016 International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers during the commendation ceremonies on December 1 at the United Nations University, Tokyo, Japan.
