PRESS RELEASE UPAA RESETS DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS TO THE 2020 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARDS The University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA), in view of the COVID-19 pandemic protocols, is extending the deadline for nominations to the 2020 UPAA Distinguished Alumni Awards to February16, 2021 (Tuesday). This was announced by UPAA President and Alumni Regent Reynaldo C. Laserna.  The awarding ceremonies will be held at the 2021 UP General Alumni Homecoming to be set on a more propitious date that will be published sometime before the event. Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio

(DEC. 30)—National Artist for Theatre and University Professor Emerita Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio passed away yesterday, Dec. 29. She was 90. Known as the “Grand Dame of Southeast Asian Children’s Theater,” Lapeña-Bonifacio was conferred the title National Artist for Theatre, the country’s highest recognition for artists, on October 24, 2018. A playwright, puppeteer and an educator, she was the founding artistic director of Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas, a children’s theater and puppet theater company established in 1977. (DEC. 17)—UP College of Music fresh graduates Joshua Ansale and Jose Antonio C. Buencamino bagged major awards in the recently held “2nd International Competition of Composers (New Music Generation 2020).” The competition held online in Nur-Sultan City, Republic of Kazakhstan from Nov. 16 to 21 was organized by the Kazakh National University of Arts in cooperation with Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Culture and Sport which aims to popularize “contemporary music in all diversity” and support and popularize “the creativity of young composers.” Both joined the said competition while still CMu students.
