UPD student develops seismic instrument, wins award

Aside from CharM, the fast-charging technology for electronic vehicles from UP Diliman (UPD), winning in the electric power and energy category at the WorldInvent Singapore 2024 (WoSG 2024), an earthquake recording instrument developed by a student from the UP Diliman Technology Management Center (TMC) also won a gold medal at the WoSG 2024, this time in the electronics and mechatronics category.

Rodolfo Alfonso R. Sabio, a Master of Technology Management student at the TMC, and his group Tekton Geometrix, Inc. developed the QBX-SMA (strong motion accelerograph). According to Sabio in an UPDate Online email, it is “designed for measuring, detecting, recording, and analyzing strong seismic incidents that can potentially cause structural damage to buildings.”

The technology also received the Best International Invention Award from the Korea Invention Promotion Association, one of the WoSG 2024’s supporting partners.

According to TMC, in its Facebook post, the instrument “detects ground motion and measures building acceleration and displacement velocity.”

In a related development, the group’s feat at the WoSG 2024 was recognized and celebrated by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Technology Application and Promotion Institute at the 2024 National Invention Contest and Exhibits Presidential Awards last July 24 held at the Sheraton Hotel Manila in Pasay City. Present at the event were Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, who watched the group’s presentation.
