DPO issues social media safety infographic

The UP Diliman (UPD) Data Protection Office (DPO) recently shared an infographic on responsible use of social media while on vacation.

The DPO reminded students to think twice before sharing personal information such as photos of their passport, boarding passes, and other travel details. The infographic was made public on July 3.

Examples of personal information are name, address, mobile number, and home telephone number.

Republic Act 10173, also known as the Data Privacy Act of 2012, defines personal information as “any information whether recorded in a material form or not, from which the identity of an individual is apparent or can be reasonably and directly ascertained by the entity holding the information, or when put together with other information would directly and certainly identify an individual.”

The DPO also advised students against real-time posting and geotagging to “avoid compromising your safety and security.”

The office concluded with a reminder for students to adjust their social media privacy settings “to control who can view your posts and limit access to the people you trust.” UPD is currently on a break, with nearly all graduate and undergraduate students back home or on vacation. Classes resume on July 17, Monday.
