Jose Carlo G. de Pano, PhD, an associate professor of speech communication, is UP Diliman’s (UPD) new vice chancellor for student affairs. The immediate past director of the UPD Information Office (UPDIO), he was appointed as vice chancellor last Jan. 1.
A faculty member of the UPD Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts since 2008, de Pano brings with him a wealth of administrative experience. He served at the Office of the Chancellor Executive Staff as UPDIO director from 2021to 2024 and at the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) as college secretary from 2015 to 2018, student affairs coordinator from 2014 to 2015, and assistant college secretary from 2011 to 2012.
de Pano earned his PhD (communication and information sciences) from the University of Alabama in 2021 under a Fulbright-CHED Scholarship Program for Graduate Students. He acquired his MA (sociology) in 2013 and BA (speech communication, magna cum laude) in 2008 from UPD.
Throughout his academic career, de Pano has earned several teaching and research awards. He received the Gawad Tsanselor para sa Natatanging Guro (Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Teacher) from UPD in 2018. He was also conferred with several UP System International Publication Awards from 2022 to 2024, as well as the UPD Centennial Professorial Chair in 2018 and from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, he was a recipient of One UP Faculty Grants (2016–2018, 2019–2021) and Professorial Chair (2023–2024).
He has published studies on public speaking, source credibility, persuasion, and interpersonal communication, including Typologies of rejected requests and compliance-resistance strategies in various interpersonal influence contexts in the Atlantic Journal of Communication, Persuasion target-related variables and compliance resistance in different interpersonal influence situations in the journal Psychology of Language and Communication, Finding comfort in uncertainty: Dealing with anxiety caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the Southeast Asian Media Studies Journal, and Source credibility dimensions in Philippine president Duterte’s state of the nation addresses in Asia-Pacific Social Science Review.
He succeeds Jerwin F. Agpaoa, who has since then been appointed as vice chancellor for community affairs on 1 November 2024.
