Kara Patria C. David-Cancio, an assistant professor of journalism and chair of the Department of Journalism at the UP Diliman College of Mass Communication, was awarded twice at the 35th Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) Star Awards for Television for her work as a documentarian and host.
David-Cancio won as best educational program host for the magazine show, Pinas Sarap. She also won for i-Witness: The GMA Documentaries, which bagged best documentary program.
Pinas Sarap tours and highlights the country’s culinary diversity, while i-Witness, which she co-hosts with fellow journalists Howie Severino, Sandra Aguinaldo, and Atom Araullo, is one of the country’s premier documentary shows. Both programs are produced and aired by GMA Network Inc. (GMA).
“Alam niyo po nung kino-conceptualize namin iyong Pinas Sarap, ito ay isang programa na ang layunin po ay mapatatag pa iyong pagmamahal natin sa ating kultura at kasaysayan. Makakaasa po kayo na sa mga susunod na taon lalo pa namin kayong bubusugin hindi lang ang inyong sikmura pati ang inyong mga mata, pero pati na rin ang inyong kamalayan,” David said in her acceptance speech.
A prolific documentarian, David is one of a select few journalists in the country to win a George Foster Peabody Award, considered the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize for print media, for her work in the 2009 i-Witness documentary, Ambulansiyang de Paa (Ambulance on Foot).
“Alam niyo po, 23 years na ang i-Witness. We are the longest running public affairs program in the Philippines at mula noon hanggang ngayon sinusuportahan kami ng PMPC, so malaking karangalan po ito at makakaasa po kayo in the next 23 years magbibigay pa po kami ng mas makabuluhang mga dokumentaryo,” she said in her acceptance speech with program manager JC Rubio.
The 35th PMPC Star Awards for Television was held on Jan. 28 at the Winford Manila Resort and Casino.
