CHE faculty win big in 1st PATHESCU awards

Four faculty members of the UP Diliman College of Home Economics (CHE) were among the recipients of the first Philippine Association for Technology in Home Economics of State Colleges and Universities, Inc. (PATHESCU) Home Economics Professional Awards.

Maria Fema S. Aquino, PhD, Joanne R. Bantang, PhD, Mary Justine Clarise A. Trinidad, and Adelaida V. Mayo, PhD were all recognized for their achievements and contributions to home economics.

Aquino and Bantang both received the Professional Home Economics Service Award. In addition, Aquino and Trinidad were honored with the Home Economics Professional Award in Teaching, while Bantang was given the Home Economics Professional Award in Extension.

According to the CHE, Aquino’s “dedication in carrying out the mission, vision, and objectives of PATHESCU has steered the organization to greater heights and has made a significant impact on the lives of many people. Her outstanding initiatives in the pursuit of quality education in home economics and its related fields as well as her exemplary performance as mentor to her students are likewise highly recognized.”

Aquino is an assistant professor at the CHE Department of Food Science and Nutrition, and has been PATHESCU president since 2022.

The CHE states that Bantang was awarded for her “valuable contributions to the PATHESCU Journal and her remarkable service to the Filipino people, to the CHE, and to UP through volunteer work and extension activities.”

An associate professor at the CHE Department of Home Economics Education (DHEEd), Bantang served as secretary to four PATHESCU presidents.

Trinidad, an assistant professor at the DHEEd, was recognized for her “outstanding performance and competency in the pursuit of quality education in home economics and its related fields.”

“Her passion, expertise and unwavering commitment inspired and enriched the knowledge, skills and values of her students,” the CHE states.

For her “outstanding contributions in teaching, research, and extension in the discipline of home economics and its related fields,” former CHE dean Adelaida V. Mayo, PhD was given the Home Economics Lifetime Achievement Award.

“This prestigious award celebrates her lifelong dedication and impactful work that have significantly advanced the field of home economics. Her exceptional commitment to excellence and unwavering efforts to educate, innovate, and extend knowledge to the community have set a remarkable example to all,” the CHE states. The awards were given during the 26th PATHESCU Annual and Training Conference held on July 12 at the Cagayan State University in Tuguegarao City.—With a report from the CHE
