3 CS profs receive NAST awards

The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Philippines recognized three UPD College of Science professors for their outstanding contributions in the advancement of science and technology in the country.

Professors Gay Jane P. Perez, PhD of the UP Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (IESM) and Pierangeli G. Vital, PhD of the UP Natural Sciences and Research Institute were recognized as the year’s Outstanding Young Scientists in the field of Satellite Technology (Physics) and Biology, respectively.

UPD Institute of Mathematics professor Renier G. Mendoza, Dr.rer.nat. won the grand prize of the 2021 NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists (NTSYS) with his research “A Two-Phased Segmentation Approach to the Impedance of Tomography Problem.”

The OYS award is given annually to young Filipino scientists who made significant contributions to science and technology. The awardee should be “of exceptional ability to undertake scientific research as evidenced by papers published in reputable scientific journals.” The NTSYS on the other hand aims to encourage young people to pursue a career in science.

In a related development The UP Marine Science Institute was awarded with 2021 Outstanding Book Award for their work “MATYAG: State of Coastal Habitats in the Six Philippine Biogeographic Regions.” The award is given annually for books and/or monographs published by Filipino publishers based in the Philippines within five years preceding the award.

NAST, established in 1976, was created to recognize exemplary achievements in the science and technology and to serve as a reservoir of competent scientific and technological manpower for the country. NAST also serves as the advisory body of the Philippine President on policies concerning science and technology in the country.
