August 15, 2016 — The Journalism Department of the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines, is once again calling for applicants for its flagship Graciano Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop.

The 20th workshop will be held from November 6 to 11, 2016 at the UP College of Mass Communication, Diliman, Quezon City, with the theme, “Science Journalism: Contextualizing Science Reporting for Philippine Communities.”  Resource speakers from UP’s science community will enrich the fellows’ knowledge on the various areas of the science beat while the journalism faculty of UP will introduce them to the new tools and techniques of reporting, including data visualization.

Funded through an emerging interdisciplinary research program (EIDRP) on Communicating Science and Technology Research and Development in UP (CoST-UP) of the UP System, this year’s workshop aims to train 20 science journalists from the print, broadcast and online media, including four regional information officers of government science offices and one regional reporter of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA). Full and partial fellowships are available, which may cover travel, food and accommodation expenses.

Since its first workshop in 1985, the Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop has trained hundreds of community journalists. Among the past fellows are Cong Corrales, Raymund Villanueva, Dino Balabo, Froilan Gallardo, Frank Cimatu, Ilang-ilang Quijano, Jo Clemente, Diosa Labiste, Danny Calleja, Flor Abanto and Maurice Malanes.
