(MAR. 24)—Prof. Deo Florence L. Onda, PhD of the UP Marine Science Institute successfully completed the submersible dive to the Emden Deep, which is 10,540 meters below sea surface.  Emden Deep is the deepest part of the Philippine Trench.

A Filipino scientist reached depths greater than the Mt. Everest’s summit, which stands at 8,849 meters above sea level. Indeed, a truly proud moment for the Philippines.

“I hope that the Filipino people will be able to share in my experience the Emden Deep. I want them to appreciate and understand that this unstudied and unknown region is an extension of their marine heritage. I would also like to think that this feat was realized in recognition of the contributions of Filipino scientists, and that we can all accomplish great things given proper support and recognition,” Onda said.

The exploration was in collaboration with Caladan Oceanic, a private company that develops undersea technology. Deo plunged into the Philippine Trench on board DSV Limiting Factor and in the company of Caladan Oceanic founder Victor Vescovo, who currently holds the record for the deepest manned descent into the Marianas Trench in 2019.
