"Planner of the Year"

June 19, 2009---Former
SURP professor and Director of Training, Prof. Ernesto M.
Serote was chosen by the
Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) as the recipient of
the 2009 Outstanding Professional of the Year Award in
the field of Environmental Planning. |

Prof. Serote was cited
for his high degree of competence and integrity in the exercise of
the planning profession, which recognized him as the “Guru of
Philippine Local Planning”.

23 June 2009---The
UP School of Urban and Regional Planning, led by Dean Candido
A. Cabrido, Jr. and the rest of School officials, faculty and
staff members, welcomed the new graduate students in an orientation
program held at the Firmalino Room.

May 8, 2009---The
UP
School of Urban and Regional Planning
hosted a special program and dinner in honor of its three retiring
faculty members; namely, Dr. Primitivo C. Cal; Prof.
Rosario D. Jimenez; and Prof. Ernesto M. Serote. In his
remarks, Dean Candido A. Cabrido, Jr. expressed feeling sadness over
the retirement of three of the School’s most experienced faculty
members, on the one hand, and hope, on the other, that the three
will continue assisting the School, particularly in implementing the
new SURP Curriculum and in projects of the School’s foundation, the
UP Planning and Development
Research Foundation, Inc. (UP PLANADES).

SURP graduates
44 students

April 26, 2008---The
School
of Urban and Regional Planning recognized forty-four
graduating students, including three (3) Dean's Medalists, in a
ceremony held at the UP SURP Firmalino Room, just before the 98th
University Commencement Exercises.
Mr. Tomi Cabueños, Jr., the UP Alumni Association SURP Chapter
President, was the occasion's guest speaker.

4 Bulacan LGUs to join SURP-DOST
project
The province of Bulacan, the municipalities of Balagtas, Santa
Maria, and Marilao, and the city of Malolos will participate as
pilot areas in the SURP-DOST project “LGU Networking for Sustainable
Land
Use Planning and Development”. Funds for the research were
taken from a P500,000 grant from the Congressional Initiative
Allocation of former Senator Ramon Magsaysay, Jr. The grant
was also used to purchase much-needed computers and other equipment
for the SURP.
Representatives from the local
planning and development offices of the local governments met with
UP SURP Research and Publications representatives, headed by Dr.
David Leonides T. Yap, to discuss said project, which is
implemented by the SURP in
partnership with the Philippine Council for Industry and Energy
Research and Development (PCIERD) – Department of Science and
Technology (DOST).

and seascapes in a developing economy
The
School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) as a center for
learning and research in the development of innovative theories,
tools, and sustainable practices in urban, rural and regional
planning adapted to developing countries
Mission
The SURP’s
mission for the next three years (2007-2010) is to
further enhance its contribution to socioeconomic development
and nation-building by:
Improving the quality of education in the school and producing
highly competent planners.
Extending technical assistance to government, non-government
organizations (NGOs), peoples' organizations (POs), the private
sector, and other academic and research institutions on policy
formulation and plan preparation for the development of
localities, regions, and the nation.
Disseminating new knowledge on urban and regional planning
theories, tools, and practices through the school’s publications
and training programs.
Protecting and fighting for the welfare of society
-particularly
the poor- and promoting social justice and equity in the
formulation of development plans and programs.
Thrusts
Enrich
curriculum and establish areas of specialization;
Upgrade
teaching, training, and research facilities;
Enhance
competencies of faculty and staff on novel and advanced planning
methods and techniques;
Mobilize
resources to improve the school’s physical facilities, support
faculty and staff development, and expand scholarship programs;
Strengthen and widen linkages and networks with international
organizations and foreign universities for joint academic,
research, and training
programs, and exchange of faculty and publication programs;
Increase
enrolment of planners from poor municipalities in the
School's Diploma and training programs, through cross subsidies
and scholarships
