UPD Dancesport Team reaps awards at UPS Dance Sport Championship

The UP Diliman (UPD) Dancesport Team did the University proud with more than 30 awards at the UP System Oblation Sports – Dance Sport Championship 2024 (UPS Dance Sport Championship 2024), which attracted more than 300 participating entries.

The UPD Dancesport Team consists of student-athletes from the UP Dancesport Society and UP Filipiniana Dance Group. They were coached by Lalaine Rosenda J. PereƱa, associate professor at the UPD Department of Physical Education (DPE); Alberto S. Dimarucut, DSD, associate professor at the DPE; Sergio Machon Jr.; Lina Basas-Machon; and Jay-Ar Fernandez.

The UP Dancesport Society earned six championship titles, three 2nd places, five 3rd places, two 4th places, three 5th places, and two 6th place titles. These were won by the Machon pair; Fernandez and lawyer Althea Maliwanag; student-athletes Eman Clifford Ros and Patricia Angel Ramos, and John Roni Paderes and Sophia Anne Luces; and by solo student-athlete, Yel Vallejos Yu.

The Machon pair won two champion titles (Latin teacher-guest D, and Latin teacher-guest C).

Fernandez and Maliwanag won two champion titles (standard closed UP, teacher-guest D, and standard closed UP, teacher-guest C) and earned 2nd place for standard grade B.

Ros and Ramos won two champion (Latin closed up, student-student D, and Latin intercollegiate D) and two 3rd place (Latin closed up, student-student C, and Latin intercollegiate C) titles.

Paderes and Sophia Anne Luces won two 2nd places (Latin intercollegiate D and Latin intercollegiate C), a 4th place (Latin grade D), a 5th place (Latin closed UP, student-student D), and two 6th place (Latin grade C and Latin closed UP, student-student C) titles.

Meanwhile, Yu earned three 3rd places (closed UP solo cha cha, closed UP solo rumba, and closed UP solo jive), a 4th place (closed UP solo waltz), and two 5th places (closed UP solo tango and closed UP solo quickstep).

For their part, the UP Filipiniana Dance Group won two 2nd places, five 3rd places, four 4th places, and one 5th place title. These were earned by the two pairs of student-athletes, Steven Bermudez and Anna Beatriz Araneta, and Jesse Adrian Valdez and Jelany Paguio, and solo student-athlete Kyle Ballar.

Bermudez and Araneta won 2nd place (standard closed UP, student-student C), 3rd place (standard closed UP, student-student D), and 4th place (standard intercollegiate C) titles.

Valdez and Paguio won 2nd place (standard closed UP, student-student D), 3rd place (standard closed UP, student-student C), and 5th place (standard intercollegiate C) titles.

Ballar on the other hand, won three 3rd places (closed UP solo waltz, closed UP solo tango, and closed UP solo quickstep) and three 4th places (closed UP solo cha cha, closed UP solo rumba, and closed UP solo jive).

The UPS Dance Sport Championship 2024 was held at the Gaisano Mall of Cebu from June 8 to 9.
