The UPD-based team brought home one of the three (two gold, one silver) medals the Philippines earned at the international cheer competition.

The UPSDC was one of the three groups that represented the Philippines at the ICU World Cup Seoul 2023. The other two were the Southies Cheer Club-Team Philippines and DanSSA. The former won the gold medal at the Coed Elite Division of the Final Cheerleading Session, while the latter won the silver medal at the Junior Hip Hop Division.

On its Facebook page, the UPSDC posted that the group is the “first Philippine collegiate team to compete and win as champions in the [ICU] World Cup Seoul 2023.”

The UPSDC was formed in 1997, and according to the group’s profile on the UPD Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts website, it continues to train interested UP students in the art of dance “and remains steadfast in its mission to represent, inspire, and reinforce God-centered living through dance.” Meanwhile, according to the ICU website, the ICU is the recognized world governing body of cheer (cheerleading and performance cheer). It attained this recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 20 July 2021. The IOC declared the ICU as the world governing body for the sport of cheer and its disciplines, and the global authority on all related matters. Established in 2004, the ICU is composed of 119 member national cheer federations from all continents.
