(OCT. 27)—The Office of the Chancellor (OC) of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) released today, Oct. 27, the UPD Suspension Guidelines for Storm Signals During Remote Learning.
The guidelines for suspension came in light of the recent typhoons the country faced that disrupted online classes in the country.
In his directive (OC Memorandum No. FRN-20-058), UPD Chancellor Fidel R. Nemenzo said the guidelines should be applied with consideration “for the students’ place of residence, or where they have chosen to participate in synchronous or asynchronous classes.”
Synchronous classes are live online courses that are conducted in real-time , while asynchronous classes are online classes where instructors provide materials, lectures and tests that can be accessed at any time and students may be given a time frame to connect.
According to the Guidelines, online synchronous classes during Storm Signal No. 1 are suspended due to internet connectivity issues caused by the typhoon.
Online synchronous classes are also suspended during Storm Signal No.2 due to internet connectivity issues, and possible power and telecommunication service interruption. The faculty is requested to be lenient to students especially from affected areas and exercise flexibility in submitting requirements by postponing submission deadlines.
Finally, during Storm Signal No. 3 and above, both synchronous and asynchronous classes are suspended due to internet connectivity issues, and possible power and telecommunication service interruption. The faculty is requested “to refrain from asking students to submit any class requirements.”
