Stat has new dean

Lansangan

(NOV. 13)—Prof. Joseph Ryan G. Lansangan, PhD is the 10th dean of the UP Diliman (UPD) School of Statistics (Stat).

The University of the Philippines Board of Regents approved Lansangan’s appointment at its special meeting on Oct. 11.

Lansanga, who succeeded Prof. Claire Dennis S. Mapa, PhD, will serve until Oct. 10, 2022.

Under his watch, Lansangan aims to strengthen the School’s graduate programs, evaluate and update the undergraduate and the service courses offered, innovate delivery of courses and pedagogical practices, and to actively participate in academic community through research dissemination (both national and international).

Prior to his appointment, Lansangan was director of the UPD Interactive Learning Center from June 2014 to October 2019 where he institutionalized the structured feedback mechanisms (web and multimedia) for services and programs (internships and trainings). He implemented programs/projects related to UVLê which translated to a steadily increasing number of users particularly the faculty members.

UVLe is an “online course management system that enables faculty members to organize their classes around topics, themes, weekly schedules, upload digitized materials and share them with students.”

Lansangan earned his BS (magna cum laude), MS and PhD in Statistics from UPD in 2002, 2006 and 2014, respectively. His research interests are computational statistics, nonparametric methods, high dimensional data analyses, data mining and impact assessment, among others. As a mentor, he advised and co-advised more than 30 undergraduate and graduate Statistics majors.

He has authored nine articles in ISI-indexed journals (3) and in Scopus-indexed journals (6), and has published at least 15 research studies in local and international journals, and in conference proceedings.

Lansangan received numerous recognitions and awards which include: One UP Professorial Chair Award for 2019-2021 and 2016-2018; School of Statistics Best Teacher Award (Graduate Program) AY 2016-2017; UPD Centennial Professorial Chair in 2015, 2017 and 2018; the UPD Centennial Faculty Grant in 2016; and was conferred UP Scientist I (2014-2016) through the UP Scientific Productivity Awards. — Bino Gamba, photo by Joseph Ryan Lansangan
