Scholars mentor PhD students in EuroSEAS masterclass

Five leading scholars on Southeast Asian studies are set to mentor a select group of PhD students at the UP-hosted EuroSEAS PhD Masterclass 2025 in UP Diliman (UPD) from July 15 to 17.

The three-day masterclass at the UP Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) will bring together academics, researchers, and scholars from Europe and Southeast Asia. Participants will engage in various activities and discussions covering the region’s diverse topics.

According to the UPCWGS, the EuroSEAS PhD masterclass “provides an opportunity for young scholars to interact and engage with experts in the fields. Its goal is to enrich the academic endeavors of young scholars in Southeast Asia.”

The scholars who will serve as mentors for this year’s masterclass are Manneke Budiman, PhD, professor of literature at the University of Indonesia; Sayamol Charoenratana, PhD, researcher at the Social Research Institute of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand; Reza Idria, PhD, assistant professor at the State Islamic University in Banda Aceh, Indonesia; Silvia Vignato, PhD, professor at the Universita di Milano-Biccoca in Italy, and former EuroSEAS president; and Marie Aubrey Villaceran, PhD, assistant professor at the UPD Department of English and Comparative Literature and UPCWGS director.

EuroSEAS PhD Masterclass 2025 is organized in partnership with the UP Office of International Linkages and UPCWGS, under the leadership of Eloisa May P. Hernandez, PhD, professor at the UPD Department of Art Studies, EuroSEAS board member, and UPCWGS fellow.

The UPCWGS describes EuroSEAS (European Association for Southeast Asian Studies) as a European-based association that “aims to stimulate scholarly cooperation and collaboration within Europe and Southeast Asian countries.”—With a report from UPCWGS
