(FEB. 3)—Prof. Fidel G. Nemenzo, DSc of the College of Science Institute of Mathematics is UP Diliman’s 11th Chancellor.
UP President Danilo Concepcion made the announcement in front of a cheering crowd after the 1350th meeting of the Board of Regents on Feb. 3 at Quezon Hall.
Nemenzo earned his a Professor of Mathematics and current Vice Chancellor for Research and Development. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from UPD in 1985 and his Master of Science in Mathematics and Doctor of Science in Mathematics from Sophia University in Tokyo in 1992 and 1998, respectively.
In the public forum on Jan. 16, Nemenzo shared his vision for UPD as an inclusive, diverse and public service-oriented university with six areas of development: academic excellence; academic freedom and integrity; democratic governance; well-being and dignity of the academic community; administrative and operational efficiency; and safety and disaster preparedness.
Nemenzo addressed the crowd after the announcement, saying “Alam kong nandito kayo hindi para ipaglaban ako kundi para ipaglaban ang UP. Narito kayo para sa academic freedom. Narito kayo para sa demokratikong pamamahala. Narito kayo para marinig ang boses ng ating komunidad, sa mga importanteng desisyon ng BOR. Narito kayong lahat para sa UP Diliman,” he said.
“Inaasahan kong makakasama ko kayo sa mga darating na raw. Inaasahan ko ang inyong pakikilahok at pagkakaisa sa mga darating na hamon at pagsubok na sama-sama nating haharapin,” he added.
Nemenzo will assume UPD’s top post over from Prof. Michael L. Tan, DVM, PhD, and will serve the University for three years.—Anna Regidor, photo by Jacelle Bonus
