NSRI celebrates 60th year

July 02, 2024
The UP Diliman (UPD) Natural Sciences Research Institute (NSRI) celebrated its 60th founding anniversary on June 25 with the theme, Celebrating NSRI Legacy, Charting New Directions in Research and Extension. The event featured presentations from the four in-house laboratories, namely the Biological Research and Services Laboratory, the DNA Analysis Laboratory (DAL), the Microbiological Research and Services Laboratory (MRSL), and the Research and Analytical Services Laboratory (RASL). Photo by Jefferson Villacruz, UPDIO UPD Chancellor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II, in his message, emphasized the essential role of the NSRI in the UPD’s research and extension endeavors. “The NSRI’s work is invaluable, significantly contributing to the advancement of Philippine society through technological transfer and bridging the gap between academia and communities, school, industry, and other sectors. The institute’s unwavering commitment to its mission is evident in the legacy passed down from generation to generation of scientists who are not only skilled but also socially aware and service-oriented,” said Vistan. Maria Auxilia T. Siringan, PhD, the NSRI officer-in-charge, acknowledged the pioneering efforts and hard work of the NSRI’s first director, Bienvenido T. Miranda. In his honor, the NSRI building was named Miranda Hall in 2000.   Siringan. Photo by Jefferson Villacruz, UPDIO “While the institute turned 60 years old, which to us humans is equated to the senior stage of life, the NSRI will not retire but will keep on moving forward as it navigates through the advances in science and technology, during this age of genomics, data science, and artificial intelligence,” Siringan said. Meanwhile, the newly created UPD Research Ethics Board (REB) held an exhibit at the NSRI where it is housed. The exhibit featured the workflow of the research ethics review process in obtaining ethical clearance for research projects. According to its publication material, the REB “aims to safeguard the rights, dignity, and welfare of research participants by rigorously evaluating potential risks, benefits, and the informed consent process prior to research implementation.” In addition to the exhibit, the DAL, MRSL, and RASL laboratories were opened in the afternoon for guests to see what the laboratories offer. The staff members of each laboratory gamely answered queries from guests about what they do in their specific laboratory. Attendees at the anniversary celebration. Latest PhJLIS now available

July 05, 2024
The latest issue of the Philippine Journal of Librarianship and Information Studies (PhJLIS) by the UP Diliman (UPD) School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) is now available online. Journal cover. Image from PhJLIS According to the SLIS, this second issue of Volume 43 contains articles on “health sciences librarianship in the Philippines, modern Thai archival education, and teachers’ sense-making and embodied information practices” as well as “a review of a data privacy toolkit for libraries, and an editorial on teaching and mentorship in LIS research education.” One of the articles, Embodied Information Practices in Remote Education: Insights from Teachers’ Sense-Making, is authored by former SLIS dean Kathleen Lourdes B. Obille and Marina Lucas Giron, a master teacher at the Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades. Through interviews, the study investigated the sense-making processes used by teachers from Ilocos Norte as they were shifting to remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The findings underscore the resilience and adaptability of teachers in the face of uncertainty, offering insights into the dynamics of remote education, and informing strategies to support educators and students in the evolving educational landscape,” the article stated. In their editorial, PhJLIS editor-in-chief Iyra Buenrostro-Cabbab and PhJLIS associate and issue editor Elijah John F. Dar Juan wrote about the challenges facing LIS research educators, such as the “lack of students’ exposure to methods, diversity of topics and theories, and resources, and also the faculty’s lack of actual research experience.” “As teachers, we should always find and innovate ways to improve ourselves as educators and researchers, and at the same time, help our students appreciate not only the end benefits of research but also the experience of engaging in the research process itself,” Buenrostro-Cabbab and Dar Juan concluded.

Participants listening to a presentation. Photo by Jerald DJ. Caranza, UPDIO According to Section 3.6 of Republic Act 10817 or the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Act of 2016, halal means “lawful or permissible under Sharia’h (Islamic Law).” Darwin J. Absari, an assistant professor at the UPD Institute of Islamic Studies (IIS), in a correspondence with UPDate Online said, the forum “aims to provide a platform for various stakeholders in the halal industry to showcase their roles and programs as they share their efforts related to halal as well as the challenges encountered in their implementation and management.” In addition, the one-day forum was a venue for the stakeholders to collaborate and identify strategies to improve the country’s halal industries. UPD Chancellor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II said “we need to have a sustainable plan and strategic goals so that we can effectively chart our endeavors in halal development.” Vistan. Photo from the IIS Facebook page Vistan explained that “UP is positioning itself under the current administration to play a crucial role in this development through comprehensive engagement particularly in facilitating informed discussions on halal and its development by strengthening halal research and development in constituent universities in the UP System.” He also said that he looks forward to more halal-related engagements in the future. Meanwhile, IIS Dean Julkipli M. Wadi said the growing interest and advancements in the halal industry in the country “necessitates that we continue to collaborate, engage in more discussions, and identify milestones in our engagements with halal so we can identify problems and challenges, and how to address them we could move toward a common direction.” Apart from presentations, the forum also had a roundtable where participants talked about the challenges faced by halal industries in the country and discussed possible ways to address these. Halal Forum was organized by the IIS and the UP Center for Integrative Development Studies-Islamic Studies Program. It was held on June 25.
