OASD holds summit for coaches

The Office for Athletics and Sports Development (OASD) under the UP Diliman (UPD) Office of the Chancellor recently held the Coaches Summit 2024, a two-day team-building workshop.

At the summit, the UP coaches were oriented about the OASD’s mandate, vision-mission, organization structure and scope of work, and its partners and customers.

According to Maria Imelda E. J. De Dios, head of the OASD Resource Mobilizations and Alumni Relations, the coaches participated in a workshop on how to build a competitive sports program. They were able to assess their team’s needs, and build an inventory of their team’s resources. They also discussed target setting and the importance of having a team organization and systems in place.

Representatives of various UP offices were also present to talk about the services their offices offer for student-athletes and varsity teams.

Aileen Gerona of the University Food Service (UFS) talked about how UPD student-athletes can avail of food subsidy. Gerona and the coaches also discussed how to improve UFS services in terms of the food’s nutritional value.

Meanwhile, UP Procurement Office (UPPO) Director Rissa L. Ofilada discussed the procurement procedures for supplies and equipment. Ofilada emphasized the importance of procurement planning and having complete and correct documentary requirements. She also gave an overview of the New Government Procurement Reform Act. Jerry Jaena Jr. of UPPO talked about the modes of procurement and about drafting technical specifications.

UP Health Service (UPHS) Director Myrissa L. Alip, MD discussed UPHS services, including the pre-enrollment health assessment for newly admitted UPD student-athletes. She also mentioned services for UPD student-athletes born of the partnership between the UPHS and the Philippine General Hospital.

Yakal Residence Hall Manager Maricel Rodriguez touched on the processes and guidelines for applying for a slot in the UPD dormitories.

The summit also had discussions about plans for resource mobilizations, the importance of alumni and media relations, social media management, admissions processes to the UP Varsity Athletic Admission System, training facilities and transportation services for varsity teams during training and actual games, and some of the initial OASD plans and upcoming activities for UPD student-athletes.

In a related development, OASD Director Dolreich “Bo” Perasol announced that UP placed third at the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 86 general championship, and that UP would be the UAAP Season 87 host. The summit was held from May 23 to 24 at the Novotel Manila in Araneta City.
