(JUL. 1)—Isabel Montes, a Ph.D. student at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI) of the UP College of Engineering, was awarded an Internet Society (ISOC) Fellowship to attend the upcoming Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF 93) meeting on Jul. 19 to 24 in Prague, Czech Republic.

The IETF (along with its related organizations) is a large, open, international community of network operators, vendor experts, researchers, designers and other interested technologists who develop standards for the Internet.

ISOC Fellows are paired with an experienced mentor at IETF meetings and are expected to “…participate in the development of open Internet standards and best practices and make valuable connections with global peers with similar interests,” according to the ISOC .

Montes was selected after a competitive application process that received over 150 expressions of interest worldwide.

Prior to her fellowship, she is scheduled to present a paper at the 4th IEEE World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM) Workshop on Video Everywhere in Boston, Massachusetts.

Montes’s Ph.D. research focuses on a Filipino approach to the development of cooperative community wireless mesh networks called BayanihaNETS.

The research is supported by a scholarship from the Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT) program, as well as the BayanihaNETS Research Program and the SmartWire Resilient Data Transport Research Project, all funded by the Department of Science and Technology.

Montes is a BS Computer Engineering (cum laude) graduate of the EEEI and was the first BS degree holder directly admitted into its Ph.D. program.— Image from Isabel Montes.
