The UP Diliman (UPD) Office of Scholarships and Grants (OSG) recently facilitated two scholarship grants for freshmen initiated by the UP Alumni Association of Wisconsin, Ltd. (UPAA-W).
UPD had signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the UPAA-W to establish the UPAA of Wisconsin Scholarship. This one-year scholarship, to be administered by the OSG, will benefit two UPD freshmen in the next academic year.
The OSG states that for one academic year, the UPAA of Wisconsin Scholarship will provide a one-time book allowance and a monthly stipend for five months (subject to renewal at the end of the semester).
Qualifications for the scholarship grant are as follows: an average grade of 2.5 or better; an academic load of at least 15 units with no grade of 5.00, 4.00, or incomplete in the semester before applying; enrolled in at least 15 units at the time of application; and parents’ annual gross income of PHP500,000 or lower.
The MOA was signed on Aug. 22 at Quezon Hall by UPD Chancellor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II and UPAA-W President Joselito U. Conti. Also present were OSG Officer-in-Charge Christine C. Hernandez and Mark Raphael G. Conti, who served as witnesses.

On the same day, the UPAA-W signed another MOA—this time with the UP System—for the renewal of the Estrella Espejo Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship will be available to three deserving freshmen from across the UP System.
According to the UPAA-W, the scholarship was established to honor Estrella J. Espejo, a BS chemistry graduate of UP Class 1963, “whose life was marked by love, sacrifice, and generosity toward her family.” Drs. Evalynne and John Pickeral donated to start this scholarship grant.

The OSG also administers the Estrella Espejo Memorial Scholarship. For one academic year, the scholarship grant will provide a one-time book allowance and a monthly stipend for five months to its scholars. After the first semester of the academic year, the scholars are required to accomplish a renewal form.
The Estrella Espejo Memorial Scholarship is open to all freshmen enrolling for the first time in any college and any course within UP, with no prior credited college coursework; natural-born Filipino citizen; and enrolled in at least 15 units at the time of the scholarship award. Parents of applicants must have an annual gross income of PHP500,000 or lower. Applicants must have no record of disciplinary action and have passed the University of the Philippines College Admission Test. Applicants must have an average grade of 2.50 or better with a minimum load of 15 units, no grade of 5.00 and no record of disciplinary action.
The MOA for the Estrella Espejo Memorial Scholarship was signed by UP President Angelo A. Jimenez and UPAA-W President Joselito U. Conti, with OSG Officer-in-Charge Christine C. Hernandez and Mark Raphael G. Conti as witnesses.
