“MAY SUNOG! Ligtas na Paglikas sa Panahon ng COVID-19”

Special Topic

What happens when a fire hits a hospital in the dark of the night during a pandemic? What happens when that hospital is the largest COVID-19 referral hospital in the country — and operating rooms and the emergency room is shut down?  How can patients be safely evacuated when a crisis strikes a hospital dealing with a highly infectious disease? What must hospitals do to prepare for a disaster during a pandemic?

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, “May Sunog! Ligtas na Paglikas sa Panahon ng COVID-19” takes a close and intimate look at the recent fire that hit the Central Block of the Philippine General Hospital on May 16. PGH had gone through repeated drills for various types of disasters — so despite the size and intensity of the fire — had zero casualties. While the actual damage to property is yet undetermined, this is a story about how other neighboring hospitals stepped up in true Bayanihan spirit to help hundreds of patients who were displaced by this single fire.  Interviews with frontliners during the fire reveal the courage, resilience and dedication of our health workers during a highly traumatizing  event.

Dr. Rodney Dofitas, a senior surgeon and who just happened to be at PGH that evening recounts his story of how he had to lead the evacuation response and work with firefighters until the incident command system was set up.  Dr. Gap Legaspi, PGH Director will talk about the decisions that needed to be taken and how the hospital will get back on its feet.  Dr Charlie Gundran, Head of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in UP Manila will present the disaster preparedness plans and drills of the Philippine General Hospital for any crisis.  Reactors, Dr. Nina Berba will talk about infection control risks in emergencies, Dr. Stella Marie Jose, PGH Deputy Director for Health Operations will talk about the evacuation of children with cancer, and Dr. Jonas del Rosario will discuss communication and working with media.

Join us as we discuss how disaster preparedness plans and drills are critical to our hospitals during the pandemic.
