CEd conducts 3rd NRSEL

In celebration of its 75th founding anniversary, the Educational Administration Area (EDAD) of the UP Diliman (UPD) College of Education (CEd) [EDAD @75] recently held the 3rd National Research Symposium for Education Leaders (NRSEL 2025) with the theme EDAD LIPAD @ 75: Honoring the Past, Leading the Present, and Shaping the Future of Educational Administration.

The morning session featured a keynote presentation by Karol Mark R. Yee, PhD, executive director of the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II). His presentation, titled The Role of Leadership, Innovation, and Diversity in Shaping the Future of Educational Administration, set the tone for the symposium.

According to its website, EDCOM II is “a national commission tasked to undertake a comprehensive national assessment and evaluation of the performance of the Philippine education sector.”

The keynote was followed by two plenary sessions: Educational Leadership in a Changing Landscape: Best Practices and Emerging Trends by Ethel Agnes P. Valenzuela, EdD, and Innovation and Academic Excellence: Role of Administrators in Driving Quality Education in the 21st Century by Jerome T. Buenviaje, PhD.

Valenzuela is a commissioner at the Commission on Higher Education and a professorial lecturer at CEd, while Buenviaje serves as assistant secretary in curriculum and teaching at the Department of Education and was the dean of CEd from April 2019 to January 2025.

Fifteen research works were presented in the afternoon in three breakout sessions. The sessions were subdivided into four tracks: Leadership and Governance in Education, Innovations in Teaching and Learning, Policy Analysis in Education, and Diversity and Inclusivity in Schools.

The symposium started with opening remarks from Marian Christine V. Patriarca, PhD, a senior lecturer at CEd and NRSEL 2025 Anniversary faculty adviser, and concluded with closing remarks by Joel C. Javiniar, PhD, an assistant professor at CEd and officer-in-charge of the CEd Office of the College Secretary.

NRSEL 2025 was attended by about 150 educational leaders, faculty, and students from various provinces including Cavite, Laguna, Cebu, and Zamboanga del Norte. Attendees were treated to a UPD Hop-On-Hop-Off Ikot Tour before the lunch break and to a performance from the Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino, also known as Kontra-GaPi, in the post-symposium fellowship dinner.

Maria Regina Corazon S. Sibal, PhD and Angelo S. Mamis served as the symposium hosts.

The symposium was held in partnership with the Rex Education, Crea8 Salon Prime, Philippine Journal for Education Studies, UP Diliman Information Office, and UP National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development.

NRSEL 2025 was held on June 7 at the David M. Consunji Theater, Institute of Civil Engineering for the morning session, and Benitez Hall, CEd for the afternoon session.
