The UP Diliman Department of Anthropology
with the Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (OICA)
“Of Crosses and ‘Culture’: An anthropological look at 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines”
A one-day Forum on 10 March 2021, 8:30am – 4:30pm.
This one-day forum will feature critical discussions on cultural developments pertinent to the introduction and practice of Christianity in the Philippines. Panel presentations will offer critical perspectives on theories explaining ‘Philippine culture’ with evidence coming from studies and practices relating to different fields of social life, including religion, food, performing arts, material culture, and the law.
We explore the polyvalence of the word ‘cross’ in the forum. Its various meanings–a metonym for Christianity, adversity and suffering, intersection, hybridity–will serve as conceptual anchors for the different discussions.
The event will also be broadcast on the Department Facebook page and Youtube Channel (Anthropology UP DIliman).
