(September 21)—The UPVarsity Table Tennis women’s team bagged the championship award at the 2nd Tuna Festival National Open Table Tennis Championships held last September 1 and 2 at the SM Mall in General Santos City (GenSan).

The team beat the Makati City team—composed of current Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) national players—in the finals with a 2-0 score.  Two of the players, Rowena Morales and Joma Sibal, also won the 1st and 2nd place, respectively, in the Girl’s 17 and under event.  Meanwhile, the Men’s team finished in the top 8 but was defeated by the SEAG bronze medallists during the elimination round.

On September 20, the varsity team, together with their coach Prof. Oscar Yoshihiro S. Santelices of the College of Human Kinetics, paid a courtesy call on UPD Chancellor Caesar A. Saloma.

Santelices said the team’s participation in table tennis tilt in GenSan is part of their preparation for the forthcoming UAAP Season 75 game which kicks off on September 22.

Moreover, the coach requested Saloma’s support in the upcoming Chancellor’s Cup, an annual event of the College of Human Kinetics which started in 1998 during the time of Chancellor Claro T. Llaguno. The event will be held next month in UPD.  —HCP
