(September 14) - Dr. Ma. Lourdes D. Catral, the new dean of the College of Home Economics (CHE), was sworn into office by UPD Chancellor Caesar A. Saloma on September 12.
Catral is an associate professor at CHE’s Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management (HRIM) where she served as its department chair from 1998 to 2004.
She was a Visiting Professor at the Woosong University in Korea from March 2006 to June 2008 where she worked on the ongoing collaborative academic activities between HRIM and Woosong University’s College of Culinary Arts.
Catral earned her Ph.D. in Education major in Research and Evaluation in 1993, her Master of Food Science in Foods and Nutrition major in Food Service Administration in 1975, and her BS in Home Economics, all in UPD. Her area of specialization is on hospitality and tourism, and curriculum development and evaluation.
She was instrumental in the revision and approval of the graduate program Master in Food Service Administration to Master in Hotel and Restaurant and Institution Management which was approved by the University Council in July 2011.
Catral authored the Handbook in Quality Food Purchasing (Book I and II) and the Eco-Foodservice Manual. She has published numerous articles in international and local journals. Catral also presented her papers in international and local conferences.
She is the vice president of the CHE Foundation. Catral is a Regional Program Quality Assessor for the Commission on Higher Education’s Technical Working Group to Revise the Hospitality and Tourism Standards, and is a member of the Council of Hotel and Restaurant Educators of the Philippines, and the Tourism Industry Board Foundation Incorporated.
Her appointment, approved by the Board of Regents at its 1281st meeting, is effective from July 26, 2012 until her retirement on January 28, 2013. — ACG
