
Keynote speakers of the 2010 Asian Media Cooperation
and Cultural Exchange Dr. Sundeep Muppidi (University
of Hartford) and Dr. Caroline S. Hau (Kyoto University).
The UP College of Mass Communication (CMC) and Inha University (IU), one of the top universities in South Korea, held the international conference 2010 Asian Media Cooperation and Cultural Exchange on October 8 at the CMC Plaridel Hall.
The conference brought together scholars from the Philippines, Korea and other Asian countries to strengthen international academic and cultural exchange in the culture management and media studies discipline, as well as to promote the knowledge of Asian culture.
The conference’s keynote speakers were Dr. Sundeep Muppidi, associate professor of the University of Hartford School of Communication, USA; and Dr. Caroline S. Hau, associate professor of Kyoto University Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Japan. The program was hosted by UP Film Institute professor Dr. Arminda V. Santiago.
Muppidi, who is also the secretary-general of the Asian Media Information and Communication Center, Singapore, presented the paper entitled Dewesternizing the Asian and Asianising the Western in communication theory: The challenges and opportunities of globalization, new media, and the rise of Asia. Hau, on the other hand, discussed the Regional contexts of media cooperation and artistic collaboration in East Asia.
Twenty three paper presenters from the Philippines, Korea, Australia and the United Kingdom participated in the conference which was divided into six sessions: Negotiating Change, Reading Cultural Signs, Exploring Spaces, Audiovisual Media, Struggles of the Other and Tech Effects.
Members of the panel for the topic Negotiating Change,which was moderated by UP CMC Professor Eduardo Lejano, were UP College of Arts and Letters Department of Art Studies Professor Felipe M. de Leon Jr., CMC Department of Communication Research (DCR) Professor Randy Solis and Inha University’s Institute of Culture Management (ICM) Research Professor Hyeong-Yeon Jeon, Graduate School of Culture Management (GSCM) professors JiSeon Chae, Soo-Jung Park and Eun-Young Nam.
For the Reading Cultural Signs panel, the paper presenters were: IU-GSCM associate professor Dr. Youngsoon Kim and Hee-Jin Yun, UP Film Institute’s (UPFI) Shirley Evidente, International Rice Research Institute (Laguna) consultant Dan Rafael H. Palis and UPCMC-DCR’s Joanna Eunice V. Parungao. CMC professor Dr. Joel David moderated the topic.
The paper presenters for the topic Exploring Spaces were: Angeles University Foundation’s (Pampanga) Joowon Yoon, UP Asian Institute of Tourism (AIT) Assistant Professor Virgilio M. Maguigad, IU-GSCM professors Soo-Jung Park, Yanhan Zhang, Dr. Seung Kuk Baik and En-Ho Yoon. UPCMC’s Joni Gutierrez was the session’s moderator.
For the topic Audiovisual Media, the presenters were IU School of Culture Management (SCM) dean Dr. Chi Hyoun Wang, assistant professor Dr. SangWon Kim and Youngseok Kim; UPFI’s Taeyun Yu, Patrick Campos and Jongsuk Ham. UPFI professor Dr. Arminda V. Santiago served as moderator for this session.
CMC dean Dr. Roland Tolentino moderated the topic Struggles of the Other. The panel members were IU Department of Communication assistant professor Dr. Ju-Yong Ha and GSCM’s Mi-Ra Kim; CMC Department of Broadcast Communication Professor Fernando A. Austria, UPFI Professor Roehl Jamon, AIT dean Dr. Miguela M. Mena and University of Nottingham (United Kingdom) Christel DeHaan Tourism Travel Research Institute’s Carmela Bosangit.
For the last session, the topic Tech Effects was moderated by CMC Department of Journalism Professor Danilo Araowhile the paper presenters were Miriam College senior lecturer Michelle Gadja, University of Queensland (Australia) School of Journalism and Communication Professor Kumchong Lee and IU-GSCM professors Hyeon-Joo Kang and Aeng-Ah Kim.
