The Juan C. Angara Foundation and the University of the Philippines Diliman, through the Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts, the Colleges of Architecture, of Fine Arts and of Music, upon invitation of the Fondazione Romualdo del Bianco, will hold a Philippine Cultural Festival (Festival dell’ Arte Filippina) from October 16 to 18, 2010 at the Auditorium al Duomo in Florence, Italy.

Generously supporting the cultural endeavor are the Philippine-Italian Association, Rustan’s Marketing Corporation, the Trevi Group, DMCI Homes, Boysen, and Bticino.

The Festival aims to strengthen and enhance the cultural ties between Italy and the Philippines via the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of the Philippines and the Fondazione Romualdo del Bianco, and the initiation of negotiations for various Memoranda of Agreement (MOA) between the University of the Philippines, the University of Florence, the Florence Academy of Fine Arts and the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.

The Juan C. Angara Foundation will also be executing a similar agreement with the Fondazione Romualdo del Bianco.

The Festival includes an art exhibit, an academic conference, MOA signing and a music and dance concert.  It also includes educational tours of key Florentine historical and cultural assets, e.g. the Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo, the Pallazzos and Piazzas that embody the characteristic Architecture and Urbanism of the Early Renaissance.

The art exhibition at the Vasari Hall from October 16 to 18 foregrounds contemporary practice of artists from the College of Fine Arts, some of whom are based in the Philippines, the United States and Europe, as they read, react to and respond in visual language the various developments and challenges that confront Philippine Art today.

The exhibit entitled Bosetos features works on paper done by Leo Abaya, Bim Bacaltos, Alfred Rey Capiral, Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, Lito Carating, Reynaldo Concepcion, Denes V. Dasco, Joy V. Dasco, Ruben De Jesus, RM De Leon, Anton del Castillo, Neil Doloricon, Daki Fernando. Gerard Lico, Leonore R.S. Lim, Lina Llaguno-Ciani, Jay Lozada, Gerry Lucena, Jamel Obnamia, Ling Quisumbing, Riza Romero, Danilo Silvestre, Nestor Olarte Vinluan, JunYee and Phyllis Zaballero.  The exhibit is curated by Prof. Rubén D.F. Defeo.

The one day conference to be held on October 18 will be themed “Philippines-Italy: Cultural Nexus.”  Senator Edgardo J. Angara will be the keynote speaker while the Chancellor of the University of the Philippines, Dr. Sergio S. Cao, will open the event which will  present scholarly papers from the faculty of the UP Colleges of Architecture, of Fine Arts and of Music  and their Italian academic counterparts.

To present papers are Dr. Ramón Acoymo, Prof. Florentina Colayco, Prof. Rubén D.F. Defeo, Dr. Gerard Rey Lico and Prof. José Danilo Silvestre.

Counterpart scholars from the faculty of the University of Florence, the Florence Academy of Fine Arts and other institutions of higher learning in Europe have also been invited to do similar presentations.

An early evening music concert follows the conference on October 18, also at the Auditorium al Duomo, featuring musical renditions of selected Filipino compositions and an array of Italian Baroque and Classical pieces by Ramón Acoymo, tenor, accompanied on the piano by Nita Abrogar-Quinto.

A reception with the Honorary Consul, the Philippine Ambassador to Italy, local officials of the Florence City Government and members of the Philippine Community Associations around Florence and surrounding regions caps the Festival.

Selected contemporary and Philippine folk dances will be performed during the reception by a select group of students from UP together with Lara Maigue, soprano, who will render Filipino songs.

The three-day festival provides an excellent opportunity for the involved key academic institutions to establish professional ties necessary to motivate and sustain continued involvement and participation through collaborative projects to include exchange visits and trips by visiting scholars, professors and artists from both Italy and the Philippines over the three-year initial period.

In addition, a twinning agreement between Quezon City and Florence is being worked out geared toward cultural exchanges and mutual tourism endeavours.
