UPD’s varsity sports teams, collectively known as the UP Fighting Maroons, staged up a grand show at the UP Theater July 6 for its annual pep rally in preparation for the 72nd Season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
The UAAP opens July 11, 1 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.
Wielding costumes and a lot of good, maybe not-so-clean fun, the Maroons sang, danced and “acted” their way into the audience who cheered for if not laughed at their antics.
Despite the generally goofy nature of the production numbers, the Pep Rally also offered the audience a glimpse into the lives of the Maroons in and out of competition.
The UP Filipiniana Dance Troupe, UP Dancesport Society, and UP Street Dance Club also made special appearances to spice up the production numbers. The UP Pep Squad provided both star power and raffle prizes courtesy of their sponsor.
In a message, UPD Chancellor Sergio S. Cao called upon the audience and the UP community to support the Maroons this coming season, noting the difficulty of being a student athlete in the University, where academic excellence is as much a requirement as athletic ability.
The rally was sponsored by the Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts.
