UPD honors topnotch students
Parangal sa mag-aaral underscores the true meaning of being an Iskolar ng Bayan

Chancellor Sergio S. Cao thanks the awardees because they
have brought honor to the University with their achievements.

Hard work and passion are the real secrets to success, said student achiever John Gabriel P. Pelias of the College of Science in an inspirational message during the Parangal sa Mag-aaral.

Pelias is among the more than 2,000 students in the graduate and undergraduate levels recognized by for their achievements in the past year at the yearly program, held 23 Feb. at the UP Film Institute’s Cine Adarna.

Among the student achievers honored this year are the University Scholars (US) or students who have earned a General Weighted Average (GWA) of not lower than 1.25, College Scholars or students who have earned a GWA of not lower than 1.75, and those who have distinguished themselves in various fields.

This year, the Science and Technology cluster once again produced the most number of achievers as led by the College of Engineering (CoE) with 531 awardees followed by the College of Science (CS) with 291.

The Social Sciences and Law cluster came in second, producing 700 awardees composed mostly of those from the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), which had 521 awardees. It was followed by the College of Education (CE), which produced 108 awardees.

UPD also honored its graduates who scored among the highest in various licensure examinations in the country. The graduates made their presence especially felt in the Architecture, Chemistry and Geology licensure examinations.

Moreover, UPD swept the top 10 ranks of the licensure examinations for landscape architects and almost dominated the board examinations for librarians.

UPD also prides itself in molding its students’ into becoming well-rounded individuals who excel in more than one field. During the ceremony, the university honored students who won in national and international competitions.

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Elizabeth L. Enriquez proudly welcomed the student achievers. She said that wherever they go, they bring pride and glory not only to their Alma Mater but also to the entire nation as well because they carry the mark of a true UP student.

Meanwhile, Chancellor Sergio S. Cao thanked the awardees because they have brought honor to the University with their achievements. He also thanked their parents and supporters, noting that it is not easy to support children who are studying. “Your achievements are the fruits of your parents’ and supporters’ hard work,” he pointed out.

Finally, the Chancellor reminded the students: “My message to the scholars is that, being scholars, being achievers, the opportunity of being here…You are not here by accident. This is not a just a coincidence and like I have said, there are many things that are interconnected, linked… that made it possible for you to be here. Hopefully, when you wake up in the morning… You will be thankful for these blessings because not all of us are given this kind of opportunity.”

Diliman Learning Resource Center director Professor Vanessa Lusung-Oyzon hosted the ceremony. The all-girl jazz/pop trio, Bai Hana, and the Karolfest 2009 grandprize winner, the College of Science Choir, performed during the Parangal sa Mag-aaral.

The event ended with the singing of UP Naming Mahal with the accompaniment from the members of the UP ROTC Symphonic Band.
