
UPD in holiday cheers. This year’s Christmas festivities
kicked off with the Pag-iilaw, the ceremonial lighting of all the
major buildings on campus, starting with Quezon Hall. The
ceremony was presided over by President Emerlinda R.
Román and UPD Chancellor Sergio S. Cao. A short program
featuring several high-energy performances followed, starting
with the UP Symphonic Band, who flooded the air with music
and cheer while the Pep Squad wowed the UP community
on hand with several dance numbers showcasing their
choreography and athleticism. The program was capped off
with a dazzling fireworks display.
Major activities are lined up by the UP Diliman Administration to celebrate the Christmas season on campus, beginning with Pag-iilaw on Thursday, December 2. The program features community singing with the UP Symphonic Band and turning on of the festive lights on campus by UP President Emerlinda R. Roman and UPD Chancellor Sergio S. Cao. Hosted by College of Arts and Letters professor Dr. Jovy Peregrino, the program will be held at the Oblation Plaza of Quezon Hall at 6 p.m.
Two competitions are designed to bring to fore the students’ talent and creativity. The first, Karolfest, seeks the best amateur student chorus among the academic units, using Christmas carols as performance pieces. The finals will be held on Monday, December 13, at 4 p.m. at the Asian Center GT Toyota Hall of Wisdom. The event is free and open to the public.
The other is Pagandahan ng mga Belen, a competition for the most creative belen or nativity scene using recycled materials. Open to all College Student Councils of all the academic units on campus, belens in competition will be judged by their originality, imagination and appropriateness to the Christmas theme. Judges will visit the belens in competition starting December 6 and winners will be announced at the Lantern Parade program at Quezon Hall on December 17.
Paligsahan ng mga Parol is the search for the best lantern made of recycled material. Lanterns in competition must be installed at the academic units starting December 6 in order to qualify for the competition. These lanterns will then be carried by its creators at the Parada ng mga Parol or the Lantern Parade. Lanterns, to be qualified for the competition, must not exceed 10 x 10 x 10 feet. The competition is open to all UPD constituents. Winners will be announced at the Lantern Parade program at Quezon Hall on December 17.
Capping the festivities is the Parada ng mga Parol around the Academic Oval at 4 p.m. on Friday, December 17. The parade will circle the Academic Oval using a counter-clockwise route starting at Quezon Hall. Assembly of participants will be at the University Avenue at 3 p.m. A fireworks show, courtesy of Beta Epsilon fraternity will cap the night, as UPD takes a break for the holidays and awaits the New Year.
