Various women leaders, among themCollege of Social Work and Community Development (CSWCD) dean Dr. Amarrylis Torres and UPDGO coordinator and Center for Women’s Resources (CWR) chairperson Professor Marion Jimenez-Tan strongly advocated for women’s concerns at Ulat Lila Agenda for Change: Women’s Call for Election 2010, a conference calling for change in the 2010 elections held 2 March at the Bulwagang Tandang Sora of the CSWCD.
The conference, which kicked off UPD’s observance of March as International Women’s Month, highlighted women’s primary concerns that need to be addressed in the coming elections such as food, jobs, public service, honest governance and absence of violence. It was organized by the CWR, in partnership with the UPD Gender Office (UPDGO) and the CSWCD.
Other speakers (photo from left to right) were CWR Education and Training Desk Coordinator Yam Grafil, Riza Mabubay of Migrante International, Lita Mariano of AMIHAN, Nanay Fe of SAMAKANA Vitas, Dr. Leny Jara of the Council for Health and Development, Jacqueline Ruiz of Children’s Rehabilitation Center, Lovely Fugoso of Ilaw, Inc., Nanay Nancy of GABRIELA Bagong Silang, and Congresswoman Luz Ilagan of the Gabriela Women’s Party.
Grafil presented the CWR study on the current situation of Filipino women. Meanwhile, Mabubay, Mariano, Nanay Fe and Nanay Nancy shared their experiences in human rights violation, natural calamities and oppression in their jobs. Dr. Torres delivered the welcome remarks while Professor Tan provided the opening remarks. Meanwhile, CWR Executive director Mary Joan Guan delivered the closing remarks.
UP Faculty Regent Dr. Judy Taguiwalo, together with the speakers, also called for action to address job opportunities, agriculture, housing, health, children’s plight, human rights, climate change and good governance.
The conference was held on March 2 at the CSWCD Bulwagang Tandang Sora.
