(October 15)—The UP Taekwondo Varsity Team presented their UAAP Season 75 trophy in a courtesy call to Chancellor Caesar A. Saloma on October 12.
Under the guidance of head coach Nap Dagdagan Jr. and assistant coach Ralph Alombro, the Fighting Maroon jins ranked 3rd and 4th for the men and women’s division, respectively, during the final UAAP Season 75 taekwondo tournament held at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan last September 19.
The team also earned three gold, seven silver and three bronze medals in the sparring and poomsae categories.
For the sparring category, two gold medals were earned by Charizza Alombro and Joboy Someros. Gio De Dios and Karlo Ngitngit bagged two silver medals, while Nicole Sibug, Marigold Taculog and Teresa Seraña earned three bronze medals in the same category.
Men’s team members Anthony Matias, Dustin Mella and Junji Lidasan won the silver medal in the demonstration event poomsae. Mella also bagged a gold medal in the individual poomsae while Matias ang Cyrmyn Perlas won the silver medal for the mixed pair category.
Also present during the courtesy call was Dr. Aura C. Matias, College of Engineering dean and the taekwondo team’s manager. She informed Chancellor Saloma that the team will compete at the Carlos Palanca Jr. Taekwondo Tournament in January 2013 as part of their training. Qualifiers in the said competition will join the national team in several overseas sparring and poomsae competitions.—H.C.P.
