(November 13)—Colleagues, friends, UP officials, artists and former staff of UP Diliman Information Office (UPDIO) director Prof. Rubén D. F. Defeo gathered at the University Theater lobby on November 2 to greet him on his birthday and retirement party.
A Professor 12 at the College of Fine Arts (CFA), Defeo specializes in art history, theory and criticism. He earned an AB Humanities degree from the former College of Arts and Sciences at UPD in 1975 and joined the CFA as a lecturer in 1982. He served as CFA College Secretary for three terms under Dean Nestor Vinluan, from 1989 to 1998.

Defeo served four chancellors as DIO director beginning with Dr. Claro T. Llaguno in 1997. He was re-appointed by Dr. Emerlinda R. Román during her term, by Dr. Sergio S. Cao and the last by Dr. Caesar A. Saloma. He was Acting Director of the Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (OICA) since 2006 and administrator of the University Theater since 2007. He held three positions as DIO director, OICA acting director and Theater administrator concurrently since 2007.

Among Professor Defeo’s guests at the potluck party jointly organized by the staff of UPDOICA, UPDIO and the University Theater were former UP President Emerlinda R. Fernando, former student affairs vice chancellor Prof. Elizabeth L. Enriquez, former community affairs vice chancellor Prof. Cynthia Grace C. Gregorio and former vice chancellor for administration Prof. Mary Delia G. Tomacruz.
On hand to give surprise performances for the retiring professor were members of the Strings Orchestra UP ARCO under the baton of Prof. Edna Marcil “Michi” M. Martinez, the UP Concert Chorus, fresh from their world tour and an impromptu solo by its conductor Prof. Janet Sabas-Aracama and the UP Varsity Pep Squad under its coach Prof. Lalaine J. Pereña—that came prepared with a chant and cheer especially for the occasion.
