UP Concert Chorus in Sabah for “concert for friendship”

(June 10)— The UP Concert Chorus’ (UPCC) captivating performance dazzled Malaysians and Filipinos in a concert held at the Dewan Recital of the Universiti Malaya Sabah on June 4.

Under the baton of Prof. Janet Sabas Aracama, the UPCC, the official choir of the University of the Philippines, performed a repertoire of Filipino folk, Original Pilipino Music (OPM), pop, Broadway hits such as Kruhay, Glee Medley and the crowd-favorite Con Te Partiro.

Aracama said the repertoire which she specifically designed for the peace concert is proof that their role as singers goes beyond singing and entertaining. “In fact, it really has more significance now culturally. Music is now used as a venue for peace and goodwill and understanding because it really touches the heart, the soul of the people and even to our brothers and sisters here in Malaysia and our own kababayans here.”

Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia J. Eduardo Malaya said the concert is a celebration of the successful conclusion of the landmark peace deal between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front held on October 15, 2012 and was facilitated by Malaysia. He also said the 50-year –old UPCC remains as “the best cultural ambassadors for the Philippines.”

Also present at the concert were Toh Puan Datuk Seri Panglima Hajah Norlidah Datuk R.M. Jasni, wife of Sabah’s Head of State, Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Juhar Haji Mahiruddin; Datuk Teo Chee Kang, State Minister of Special Duties; State Attorney General Datuk Anthony Fernandez, and UMS Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah. —with reports from the Daily Express News Online, Sabah
