University Job Fair 2013 at UPD

(January 30)—New opportunities are once again open to jobseekers, particularly for UP students and graduates, with the week-long University Job Fair (UJF) 2013 that opened on January 29 at the Ang Bahay ng Alumni.

Over 80 companies, both local and multinational, participated in the event.

Aside from job opportunities offered by private companies, small scale businesses, government agencies and non-governmental organizations, the job fair also featured free seminars to help students choose their careers and equip them with job application skills such as resumé writing, power dressing and mock interviews.

At the opening ceremonies, UPD Chancellor Caesar A. Saloma thanked the team behind the job fair. He said as a national university, UP trains students in two aspects: content knowledge and critical thinking. For the content knowledge, he said this is the kind of knowledge learned from textbooks or exams.

On the other hand, Saloma said critical thinking is based on scientific reasoning and “the ability to breakdown a problem into its components because as the saying goes, a problem that is fully understood is already half solved.”

This year’s UJF “is an opportunity not only for our soon to be young professionals to explore opportunities for them to earn substantially and succeed in their careers, it is also an opportunity for our Iskolars ng Bayan to seriously ponder about what and how they could significantly contribute to their respective fields in a way that could best serve and benefit our country and our people,” according to Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Ma. Corazon J. Tan. Her message was read by Dr. Rosalinda de Mesa, Diliman Learning Resource Center’s officer-in-charge (OIC), during the program.

On the average, UPD contributes more than 3,000 graduates to the workforce.

Also present during the opening ceremony were Wilfredo Caballa, UP Alumni Association’s assistant treasurer; Annabelle Sangalang, Office of Counselling and Guidance’s (OCG) OIC; Oscar Gomez of OCG, University Student Council (USC) Chairperson Heart Diño and Jonas Cruz, USC-UJF 2013 head.

The event was organized by USC-UPD in cooperation with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Office of Student Activities, OCG, UP Alumni Association (UPAA), Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) and UP Ad Core. —H.C.P.
