DMST has a new commandant

(February 6)—Col. Bienvenido Ramirez Datuin Jr. INF (GSC) PA is the new commandant and department head of the Department of Military Science and Tactics (DMST) division of UPD effective January 1, 2013. He takes over from BGen Silvino Ang Alcabasa Jr, AFP. 

Datuin has had a fruitful career with the armed forces. From 1998 to 2001 he was the Brigade Intelligence and Civil-Military Operations Officer of the 703rd Infantry Brigade in Central and Northern Luzon.

It was during his stint as commander of the 28th Infantry (Kamagong) Battalion in 2007 that 54 communist insurgents voluntarily surrendered to the government.

According to the DMST, Datuin led two successful negotiations for the surrender of known members of communist terrorists: 1992 wherein Ka Rogel of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee surrendered with his wife; and in 2007 wherein 18 members of the Mindanao Manobo Defense Force FC34, SMRC surrendered with a sizable arms cache.  

Datuin holds master’s degrees in Psychology from St. Louis University in Baguio City and Management major in Human Resource Management from the University of New South Wales in Australia, graduating with high distinction.

Prior to earning his bachelor of science degree from the Philippine Military Academy (Class of 1986), Datuin completed his primary and secondary schooling from UP Integrated School.—AKR
