CFA Week kicks off
(February 18)—The College of Fine Arts (CFA) now has a spin casting machine and three wood furniture pieces donated and loaned by the Poticar Family through June Poticar-Dalisay and CFA by alumnus Benji Reyes, respectively.
Poticar-Dalisay is an artist and art restorer whose interest in art restoration began in 1991 after attending a lecture on art restoration by a Filipino from Australia. She said she donated the spin casting machine formerly owned by her father, Jesus M. Poticar, a Filipino inventor who passed away last May 7, 2012, as a symbol of her love for the University.
A spin casting machine is used in casting parts of any material for art pieces that cannot be poured via conventional low pressure methods. It is also used in manufacturing parts such as seals, large O-rings and sleeves where complete removal of air bubbles is essential.
Reyes is a popular furniture artist based in Antipolo. An influential figure in the Philippine woodworking community, he is known for his original works of functional sculptures that inspired the sculptural style of Philippine contemporary furniture.
He loaned to CFA three wood furniture pieces for a duration of three years: a bench he dedicated to National Artist for Sculpture and former CFA dean Napoleon Abueva which he named Alay kay Abueva Bench, and two special chairs called Silya ni Maria and Silya ni Benru. The chairs are on exhibit at the CFA Gallery.
The spin casting machine and three furniture pieces were turned over to the college during the opening ceremony of the CFA’s week-long celebration of the National Arts’ Month on February 12.
During the opening ceremony, Prof. Leonardo C. Rosete, CFA dean, together with Chancellor Caesar A. Saloma and UPCFAAF president Romy Carlos presented certificates of appreciation to Poticar-Dalisay and Reyes.
The CFA Week entitled Perya-perya Lang ‘Pre 2013 whichis also part of the Diliman Month celebration, was organized by the CFA Student Council in cooperation with the UP CFA Alumni Foundation (UPCFAAF).
Aside from the opening ceremony, CFA Week also featured the alumni, faculty and students’ sketching session, short film screening of works by CFA Prof. Cesar Hernando and Zombie Photography booth activities. —H.C.P.
