(December 17)— The University Council (UC) approved the 2012 Code of Student Conduct after the 125th Special Meeting at the UP College of Law Malcolm Hall on December 10.
According to Chancellor Caesar A. Saloma the new Code of Student Conduct “was passed by the UC without students angrily demonstrating outside and no heated discussion between faculty factions. This is landmark.”
Saloma said the new code will enhance UPD’s capability “to train and prepare its students become worthy national leaders who are highly capable of navigating our country successfully and responsibly in a dynamic and highly connected community of nations.”
The 2012 Code was prepared by members of the University Council Committee on Student Organizations, Activities and Welfare (UCSAOW) with Dr. Ma. Milagros Laurel of the College of Arts and Letters Department of English and Comparative Literature, as chair; previous and current Vice Chancellors for Student Affairs; past and present Student Regents; succeeding Chairs of the University Student Councils (USC) and some duly appointed faculty members as well as student leaders.
Among the UCSAOW’s members are Dr. Emmanuel Luna of the College of Social Work and Community Development, Prof. Nicolo Del Castillo of the College of Architecture, Prof. Gerardo M. Lanuza, Officer-in-Charge of the Office of Student Housing; Prof. Alvic Padilla of the National College of Public Administration and Governance, and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Prof. Ma. Corazon J. Tan.
Efforts to improve the student code started in July 2006 under the term of former UPD chancellor Dr. Sergio S. Cao.
A review committee was formed with Dr. Elizabeth L. Enriquez, then Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, as chair. Other members of the review committee where Prof. Rowena Daroy-Morales of the College of Law, Dr. Rowena Christina L. Guevara, former dean of the College of Engineering; Dr. Zosimo Lee, former dean of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), and Prof. Aurora Odette Mendoza of the CSSP Department of Psychology.
Student leaders present during the December 10 meeting were Student Regent Cleve Kevin Robert Arguelles, former Student Regent Krissy Conti, USC Chair Gabriel Paolo “Heart” Diño, former USC Chair Jemimah Grace Garcia and USC Student Rights and Welfare Committee Head Aryanna Canacan.
As of presstime, the 2012 Code of Student Conduct will go through a process until it is approved by the Board of Regents. —H.C.P.
