Earl Marvin P. Balanag (WAG: 1.1770)
BS Psychology, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy
For one who describes himself as a “small dude,” Earl is proud of being able to do “big stuff.” A football fan whose favorite team is Liverpool, he used to be a defender in high school. He is also likes to climb mountains. “I’ve already climbed six! I really like climbing because it challenges not only my body, but also my mind. This, and of course, the views on top are simply amazing!”
While he likes being active, he thinks he is more of a musician than an athlete. “I’ve been playing the piano since I was six years old. I’m classically-trained; I’ve played pieces from Bach to Chopin. Recently, however, I have been expanding my horizons. I’ve been listening to Jazz, Funk, and EDM the past few years.” Earl says he likes reading and learning, particularly military history “because the stories are really exciting,” and neuroscience because he finds it amazing that, “even though we’ve been using our brains to figure out the biggest mysteries in the universe, we still know very little about how the brain itself works. Because of this, I aspire to become a neurosurgeon/neuroscientist one day.” Yes, Earl is going to medical school.
In his four years in college, he has been a member of the UP Psychology Society, where he was Vice President for Internal Affairs from 2014 to 2015. “This means that, for one year, I was in charge of our internal parties and hang-outs,” he said. However, he admits to not being a party guy. “I go to org parties whenever we have, yes, but I’m not really a big fan. I’m the type of guy that prefers just having dinner and chill inumans with close friends.”
