James Renier T. Domingo (WAG: 1.1760)
BS Industrial Engineering, College of Engineering
James recalls that six years ago, he would not have been able to take the UPCAT if the application deadline was not extended. A year later, he had zero units prior to advanced freshman registration since he was unaware of the online pre enlistment.
He entered UP with simple ambitions: attend classes, submit all requirements and hopefully graduate after five years. “Unconsciously, I was already telling myself that I can only do so much,” he said.
However, as he immersed himself in the UP culture, he “met people of diverse origins, talents, and personalities. Being in the premier university of the Philippines, it was bound that everyone had some special skill or talent. Some excelled in sports or the arts. Some can always ace their exams. Some were natural leaders and speakers. Some had amazing credentials or special advocacies. And I was blessed to have been with them. They selflessly shared with me their knowledge, made me realize my own potential, and inspired me to do better every day.”
Eventually, he handled different projects and positions: a college registration marshal, student assistant, participate in many academic competitions, attend seminars and conferences, even engage in theatre and gastronomy, and excel in academics.
James was not alone in obtaining the university’s highest academic honors. “Without the people who helped me, I can never even dream of achieving this award. Even after making huge blunders and experiencing devastating failures, these people kept believing in me and pushed me to keep on going. “To everyone who has walked with me along this path, this one’s for you. Thank you.”
He adds that during his stay in the university, “I have found my passion, the things I want to do, and where I want to go. As this chapter of my life is about to close, I hope I have also helped others in discovering their own potential. Then again, my responsibility as an Iskolar ng Bayan has only just begun. Now, it is my time to give back.”
